Although not all quilts follow a “patchwork quilt” design as we know it, this type of bedding – traditionally made from remnants of material – was developed around the 19th century by frugal and inventive midwestern, Amish, and Mennonite women. A patchwork quilt is a blanket used for bedding that is stitched together using three layers: the top design made from textile remnants, a layer of insulation (known as wadding or batting), and a layer of material for the backing. Since there are many different styles – including geometric, formal, imaginative, etc. – we’ll show our favorite Patchwork Quilt designs in this week’s Top Ten list.
